About Zichron Yaakov

Zichron Yaakov was founded in 1882 by Romanian Jewish pioneers (Hovevei Zion). Baron Edmond de Rothschild began supporting it in 1883, rescuing the struggling settlement and transforming it into a successful colony. The colony was then named in honor of his father, James (Yaakov) Mayer de Rothschild. It is one of Israel's earliest modern towns and has played an important role in the country's history.

Today, Zichron Yaakov is home to approximately 25,000 residents. Covering just over twelve square miles (about 31 square kilometers), roughly one quarter of the municipality is urban, while the remaining land is preserved for agriculture. The local council was established in 1950.

Known for its unique blend of history, culture, nature, and wine, Zichron Yaakov has become a popular destination for both Israeli and international visitors.

Often referred to as Israel's botanical gardens, Ramat Hanadiv is a beautiful memorial to Baron Edmond de Rothschild, located between Zichron Yaakov and Binyamina. Visitors can enjoy magnificent gardens, scenic walking trails, hiking routes, cafés, and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Beyond its natural beauty, Ramat Hanadiv serves as a center for ecological research and environmental education, leading innovative conservation projects and community initiatives, including therapeutic gardening programs for people with special needs and local retirees.

The Midrachov is Zichron Yaakov's charming pedestrian main street, restored to reflect its original historic character. Lined with boutiques, art galleries, cafés, restaurants, and local landmarks, it is the heart of the town and a favorite gathering place for residents and visitors alike.

This historic home tells the remarkable story of the NILI underground resistance network and its courageous leader, Sarah Aharonson, during the First World War.

The museum chronicles the inspiring journey of the pioneers who arrived from the Diaspora during the First Aliyah (1882–1903) and helped establish modern Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel.

A Young and Vibrant Community

Zichron Yaakov has a relatively young population, with more than 65% of residents under the age of 44.

Many residents commute to employment centers in Haifa, Tel Aviv, and the surrounding high-tech hubs and universities, making Zichron Yaakov an attractive residential community. Others work locally in tourism, hospitality, agriculture, education, and small businesses.

A Welcoming Community for New Immigrants

Approximately 10% of Zichron Yaakov's population consists of families who have immigrated to Israel within the past 15 years. The community includes olim from North America, South America, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Australia, France, and many other countries, contributing to the town's diverse, international character and vibrant community life.
